The Bodrum Castle was built on a site where a Turkish and Byzantine Castle had previously existed. It stands nobly on a rocky peninsula surrounded on three sides by deep blue sea. In the 15th century the Knights brought ashlars from the Maussolleion in order to strengthen the ramparts and construct towers. The castle covers an area of 180x180 meters and its highest point is the French Tower standing 47.5 meters above sea level. Within the castle structure there are also the English, Italian, German and Spanish Towers.

Following the Turkish conquest, a minaret was erected on the far right corner of the chapel and thus the chapel was converted into a mosque (1523). During the prison era a Hamam (Public Bath) was constructed for the benefit of the prisoners (1895).

Presently Bodrum Castle is home to the "Museum of Underwater Archaeology", which stands to be unique in Turkey, and one of the most significant Underwater Archaeology Museums in the World. The book gives detailed information about the castle and all the elements it consists of, using drawings and photographs. Included are a castle plan and a map of the Bodrum region.
